THE SCHOONER SULTANA

SULTANA is a reproduction of a topsail schooner used by the British Royal Navy to enforce the infamous “Tea Taxes” along the North American coast in the years preceding the American Revolution. Built directly from the Royal Navy’s original 1768 plans, the modern SULTANA is one of the most accurate replicas of an

18th century sailing vessel found anywhere in the world.

Launched in 2001, SULTANA was built to the most rigorous safety specifications and is inspected annually by the United States Coast Guard (USCG). SULTANA sails with a USCG licensed Captain and Mate and a crew of four highly trained mariners and teachers. All of SULTANA’s crew are certified by the American Red Cross in First Aid and CPR, and many have additional certifications in lifeguarding and advanced emergency medicine.

Though SULTANA’s sail plan is strictly 18th century, her navigation, engineering and safety equipment incorporate the latest technology. In addition to being an incredibly capable sailing vessel, SULTANA also functions as a floating dormitory, laboratory and dining hall with accommodations for 17 students and crew.
