PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS
Sultana Projects’ canoe and kayak programs are a fun, cost-effective way
to get your students out onto the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. These
programs use a traveling fleet of canoes or kayaks that is brought to a
waterway near your school, where students then embark on a three to five
hour field exploration.
Overseen by Sultana Projects’ highly skilled staff, these programs
encourage students to examine the health of the Chesapeake in a manner
that is interactive, hands-on, and informative. Activities include
paddling, conducting tests to monitor water quality, shoreline
exploration, pulling seine nets to sample marine life, and examining
plankton. Throughout the voyage, Sultana Projects’ staff members help
students identify submerged aquatic vegetation (SAVs), emergent wetland
plants, and local wildlife.
Canoe-based programs are ideal for students in grades 6 through 12,
while kayak programs are ideal for students in grades 7 through 12.
Younger groups (grades 3 – 5) can be accommodated with canoes, provided
the school can bring enough parent/teacher chaperones to ensure that
there is an adult in the stern of each canoe.
Contact the Sultana Projects offices at 410-778-5954 to learn more about
scheduling a canoe or kayak program for your school.
