In Partnership with the Center for Environment & Society at
Washington College
How did one man in the eighteenth century change the way
we envision the vastness and the boundaries of our physical world? What
led one self-educated man to solve a problem that Newton and Galileo
could not? And how can studying the scientific leaps of the past help us
envision our future? In this elegant talk, Dava Sobel weaves a powerful
historical narrative to show us how John Harrison’s invention of the
chronometer changed the way we look at the world and how it continues to
shape our concept of distance and place. Sobel is one of the most
influential science writers of our time. A former New York Times science
reporter, she is the author of Longitude, Galileo’s Daughter -- which
spent five weeks as the #1 New York Times non-fiction best-seller -- and
The Planets.

Secrets -
Behind the Scenes Ten Years Ago in
Chestertown / A Forum with John
E. Swain and the Builders of Sultana / Moderated by Chris Cerino
Saturday, October 29 /
5:00pm
The Prince Theatre -
free
The construction of Sultana is widely considered one of
the most ambitious examples of community boat building seen anywhere in
the United States over the past quarter century. More than 100
volunteers participated in her construction between 1998 and 2001 -
contributing 250,000+ hours of labor. On the tenth anniversary of
Sultana’s launch, some of the core members of the construction crew -
including Master Shipwright John Swain - will reunite in Chestertown to
recount their memories of Sultana’s construction. Moderated by Sultana
Projects’ own Chris Cerino, this presentation will feature an
interactive forum with several shipwrights and volunteers, as well as
photo and video presentations that will give an overview of Sultana’s
construction and launch.

Study of the American Experience and the Center for Environment and

Hear what Ryan Lizza, D.C. correspondent for The New
Yorker magazine, has to say about how The White House and the US Senate
failed to come together on breakthrough energy legislation that was
designed to be both business and consumer-friendly. In a talk based on
his acclaimed New Yorker article, “As the World
Burns,” Lizza will chronicle how the bipartisan
efforts of John Kerry, Joseph Lieberman, and Lindsey Graham fell victi m
not only to the constituent-based pressures placed on their Senate
colleagues but also to an uncertain and often uncooperative Obama
Administration. Lizza’s presentation is the fourth
event in the Washington College Celebration of the 2011 International
Year of Chemistry.
