In July
and August of each year Sultana Projects provides five-day, live-aboard
educational trips on board the schooner Sultana as part of the Maryland
State Department of Education's Gifted and Talented Summer Centers
Program. Known as the, "Sultana Center for Field Studies in Colonial
and Environmental History," these programs provide are a opportunity for
students to immerse themselves in colonial and maritime history while
exploring the waters of the Chesapeake Bay aboard the 1768 reproduction
schooner Sultana. Program coursework focuses on
Maryland's Colonial period,
with a particular emphasis on the decade preceding the American
Revolution. During the program students are trained in the techniques of
18th century sailing and navigation, examine time period surgical tools
and armaments, read and decipher excerpts from the original logs of
Sultana's commanding officers and study nautical charts of the
Chesapeake Bay and its tidal
tributaries. Students also go ashore to explore creeks and marshes,
conduct tests to monitor water quality and analyze eyewitness accounts
of 18th century fisheries. Students are expected to complete a weeklong
research project using primary and secondary sources to conduct a
historic investigation of the life of one of Sultana's original
crewmembers.
This
program is open to rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the state
of
Maryland.
